A deeply held but only semi-critically questioned worldview I hold is that for all the ills (e.g. power-law tragedies like the World Wars or the manufacture of environments deleterious to human health or misaligned with our evolutionary priors) of technological civilization, it is the surest path towards the long-term preservation of humanity and whatever we may become, since it is the only tool we know of with the possibility to avert or curtail natural global catastrophic risks (GCRs), and given this, ought to continue to be facilitated, albeit ideally in a manner that seeks to reduce human and non-human suffering and that actually promotes GCR reduction.
This assumes that one prefers humanity to continue to exist “for as long as possible”. Writing here to pin this version of me to an external, public entity and read if anyone has more nuanced views.
As a closing note: there is a medley materials I am aware of (e.g., Bostrom’s Astronomical Waste, Thorstad’s Time of Perils, maybe d/acc, …), but have not gone through yet, that could refine the above worldview.
